This award was established in 2002 in memory of two magnificent pioneers, Reba Younge and Albert Campbell, who worked tirelessly for and on behalf of the minority ethnic community in the town and the wider community.
Reba Younge came to Stevenage as a mother and a nurse, re-trained as a teacher, set up a support group for Asian women and became a foster mother, bringing up two more children in addition to her three sons. The success of her children is a lasting testament to her single-minded determination that hard work will be richly rewarded.
Albert Campbell took the political route, challenging injustice, working in and with the community whenever he could. He became the first Black Councillor and the only Black Mayor the town has ever had. Albert – or ‘Campbell’, as he was affectionately known - performed his duties in an exemplary manner and raised a well-respected family with three successful sons.
Both Reba and Albert were part of the original ‘World Forum’, which was then known as Stevenage Ethnic Minority Group. They would indeed be proud to see how far that group has come.
The Campbell-Younge award is established in the spirit of their achievements.
If you want to nominate a person who deserves recognition in the Black and minority ethnic community please contact World Forum.
